Vineyard’s ‘Summer for Sudan’ project all started when a children’s Sunday School class was moved to do something to help.

The scripture, Luke 4:18, had been the focus of the devotion time of Ps. Mark Pope from the Vineyard Community Church in Mishawaka Indiana.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me
to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,Luke 4:18
During this same time his wife Denise contacted a member of the church who is involved with Feed The Hungry requesting information on a project called “Family Life Bucket”.
The children of Denise’s Sunday school Class, The Great Adventure, (pre-school thru 5th grade) had begun to develop a passion to feed the hungry. Over the next few weeks the children’s ownership of the project became clear as the amount of interest and money continued to grow.
“When I saw the children’s response and compassion, it was a wake-up call for the whole church” said Mark Pope, lead pastor at Vineyard.
This excitement was noticeable to other Sunday school workers and the families of the kids. “God was trying to get done His work”, “ and He used the pieces of the puzzle to get our attention and to complete this purpose for our church” said Mark Pope.
“I knew for certain that youth want to see the reality of the Gospel in a practical way effecting our society, and we were seeing it in the minds and hearts of our children, with what God had been speaking into my life during my studies and quite times it seemed clear as the pieces came together.
It has been an exciting project to watch God work in and through our church in this dimension.
We continue to pray together that God will open doors into the lives of the people of Darfur, Sudan.”
Vineyard’s ‘Summer for Sudan’ concluded Sunday September 17th, coinciding with the Global Day for Darfur observance that took place in 50 major cities in 30 nations around the world.
Over USD$12,150 was raised by the children’s Sunday school and church-wide fundraising efforts; those funds will underwrite 275,000 of the 1.3 million meals being sent to Darfur by LeSEA Global Feed The Hungry.
